- Sri Lanka's railway network has experienced periodic disruption from landslides and flooding in recent years, particularly in the hill country. The classic Kandy-to-Ella scenic route may not currently run end to end; check current status before building a trip around it.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
It depends on the coast. The south and west coasts are usually driest from about December to March, and the east coast from about May to September. The Cultural Triangle and Yala sit in the drier 'dry zone' and are usually workable for much of the year, though showers become more likely in October and November. Yala National Park has historically closed for part of the year, often around September, so check current dates before you build a trip around it.
Can you ride the Kandy to Ella train right now?
Check current status before you plan around it, since Sri Lanka's hill country railway has had periods of disruption from landslides and flooding in recent years. When the full route isn't running, many travellers reach the scenic middle section by road and pick up the train partway, which is often described as the most scenic stretch anyway. Reserved seats are usually released around 30 days before departure and can go fast in busy months, so check Sri Lanka Railways or a trusted booking agent for the current timetable.
How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?
Three days is a sampler, not a claim that you've 'done' Sri Lanka. We'd suggest a week if you want the hill country, Ella and a safari without rushing. Ten days or more makes room for the south coast beaches or the Cultural Triangle, with less time lost to packing and transfers.
Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving. Apply only through the official government ETA site, check your own nationality's current fee and validity, and avoid third-party sites that charge a markup for the same thing.
