    Slovenia

"Alps, karst caves and a coastline, all within two hours of each other"

Slovenia is Europe compressed: Julian Alps in the north, wine hills in the east, a Venetian-flavoured sliver of Adriatic in the west and caves underneath the middle. Ljubljana is a car-free river city that feels more like a large town, and nothing is ever far away.

    Best Time to Visit

May to June and September to October

    Mar – May

Waterfalls at full volume, blossom in the valleys, high passes still shut.

    Jun – Aug

Swimming in the lakes, all trails open, busiest at Bled.

    Sep – Oct

Grape harvest, golden larches, ideal hiking.

    Nov – Feb

Ski season, Christmas markets, misty karst.

    Getting Around

Small country, good roads, and a motorway vignette you must buy before driving.

    🚗 Rental Car

Ideal for the Alps and Karst. Buy the vignette at the border or a petrol station.

    🚆 Trains

Slow but scenic; the Bohinj railway through the Alps is a highlight.

    🚌 Buses

Reliable links from Ljubljana to Bled, Bohinj and the coast.

    🚲 Bikes

Ljubljana and the lake loops are made for cycling.

💡 The Vršič pass is closed by snow into spring — check before planning an alpine crossing.
