"Meet mountain gorillas in misty rainforests"

    Rwanda at a glance

    Best time to go
Rwanda has two dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, both considered the best times for gorilla trekking, since trails are firmer and less muddy. June to September, the longer dry season, is the most popular and busiest. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) mean tougher, muddier trekking conditions but lower prices and fewer visitors.
    How long to stay
We'd suggest four to five days to combine gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park with Kigali and, if time allows, a stop in Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee tracking.
    Who it's for
Wildlife travellers set on a genuinely rare experience, who don't mind a high price tag and booking well ahead.
Might not be for you if
You're hoping to book a gorilla trekking permit at short notice, especially in the June-to-September or December-to-February peak seasons. Daily permits are strictly limited and commonly need booking months ahead.

Rwanda is a land of remarkable natural beauty and inspiring recovery. Known as the 'Land of a Thousand Hills,' it's one of the best places on Earth to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

    Rwanda travel questions, answered

When is the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking?

Rwanda has two dry seasons: roughly June to September and December to February, both good for trekking since trails are firmer. June to September is the longer and busier of the two. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) bring muddier, more challenging treks but lower prices and thinner crowds.

How do you book a gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda?

Permits are issued by the government and must be booked in advance, either directly through the Rwanda Development Board or via a licensed tour operator who handles the booking for you. Daily permits are strictly limited, so booking several months ahead, especially for peak season, is essential. You'll need a passport valid for at least six months, and a minimum age applies for trekkers.

How physically demanding is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

It varies considerably and can't be predicted in advance, since gorilla families move daily and treks can range from around one hour to eight hours of hiking through dense, sometimes steep, forest terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and porters are available to carry gear if needed.

How many days do you need in Rwanda?

Four to five days covers a gorilla trek plus time in Kigali. Adding chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest, a highlight in its own right, is worth an extra two to three days if your schedule allows.
