May to October is the rainy season, with short, heavy downpours rather than all-day rain, and the west-coast beaches can develop dangerous rip currents and rough seas during storms, when red flags go up and swimming is restricted.

- You're visiting the west-coast beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata) in rainy season and expecting calm swimming conditions throughout. Red flag warnings are common then, and rip currents are a genuine hazard.
Phuket is two islands wearing one name: the neon strip of Patong, and everything else — old Sino-Portuguese shophouses, temple mornings, quiet northern beaches and a ferry pier that opens onto the whole Andaman Sea. Treat it as a base rather than a destination and it suddenly makes sense.

Is it safe to swim in Phuket during the rainy season?
It depends on the beach and the day. West-coast beaches, including Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala and Bang Tao, can develop strong swell and dangerous rip currents during storms, and red flags are raised when swimming is unsafe; always follow them. The east coast and more sheltered bays tend to stay calmer during the same conditions.
Will island-hopping boat trips run in the rainy season?
It depends on the sea conditions on the day. Speedboat trips to more distant islands are often cancelled or postponed when waves reach two to four metres, so confirm your tour's status the day before if you're travelling in the wet season. Closer, land-based day trips, such as to James Bond Island, typically run regardless of rain.
How many days do you need in Phuket?
Five to seven days lets you combine relaxed beach time with one or two day trips, whether that's snorkelling around the Phi Phi Islands, a boat trip through Phang Nga Bay, or exploring Phuket Old Town.
