    Netherlands

"Canals, bicycles, and a country that beat the sea"

The Netherlands is small enough to cross in three hours and dense enough to keep you busy for weeks. Amsterdam's canal belt gets the attention, but the country's real pleasure is on two wheels: dune paths, polder dykes, windmill villages and university towns where the bicycle is genuinely faster than the car.

    Best Time to Visit

April to May for tulips, June to September for long café-terrace evenings

    Mar – May

Tulip fields and Keukenhof, King's Day chaos on 27 April, blossom on the canals.

    Jun – Aug

Terraces, festivals, beach days at Zandvoort and Scheveningen.

    Sep – Oct

Museum weather, harvest markets, fewer crowds and cheaper hotels.

    Nov – Feb

Cold and wet, but brown cafés, Sinterklaas and Amsterdam Light Festival make up for it.

    Getting Around

Trains connect every town at least twice an hour, and bikes handle the rest. A car is a liability in the cities.

    🚆 NS Trains

Fast, frequent and simple. An OV-chipkaart or contactless card covers everything.

    🚲 Bicycles

35,000 km of dedicated paths. Rent by the day from any station.

    🚊 Trams

The backbone of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

    ⛴️ Ferries

Free across the IJ in Amsterdam and out to the Wadden islands in the north.

💡 Never walk in the red-painted bike lanes — cyclists have right of way and no patience.

Rent a bike outside the tourist centre — it's cheaper, and you'll ride like a local instead of a hazard.
