Getting Around
Small island, huge vertical. Distances look tiny on the map and take twice as long as you expect.

The only way to reach trailheads and north-coast villages freely. Expect steep hills and tunnels.

Reliable along the south coast between Funchal and Machico, sparse elsewhere.
🚕 Taxis & Transfers
Fine for airport runs and one-way hikes where you can't return to the car.

Funchal to Monte, then a toboggan ride down if you like your souvenirs adrenal.
💡 Book a taxi pickup for point-to-point levada hikes — the linear ones are the good ones.
