Crete does not do small. It has gorges you walk for six hours, Minoan palaces older than most of European history, mountain villages where lunch arrives whether you ordered it or not, and lagoons in the far west that look photoshopped. Give it more time than you think you need.

Very hot and busy; beaches best at dawn or dusk.

Warmest sea, grape harvest, quieter trails.

Rain and snow on the peaks; coastal towns go local and cheap.
Getting Around
The north coast has a fast highway; everywhere else is mountain roads and patience.

The only sensible way to reach gorges, beaches and hill villages.
🚌 KTEL Buses
Good along the north coast between Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion.
⛴️ Boats
Ferries reach Balos, Gramvousa and the roadless south-coast villages.
✈️ Two Airports
Chania for the west, Heraklion for the centre and east — choose by itinerary.
💡 For Samaria, book the bus-and-ferry combo rather than driving; the trail ends nowhere near the start.
