"Ancient marble, rooftop bars, and a city that finally got cool again"

    Athens at a glance

    Best time to go
April to June and September to October are usually the most comfortable for walking around the ancient sites, with warm weather and thinner crowds. July and August are very hot, with average highs around 33°C and heatwaves that can go higher. The Acropolis has closed at midday on extreme-heat days in recent summers.
    How long to stay
Two to three days covers the Acropolis, the main museums and some neighbourhood wandering. Add a day or two if you'd like to get out of the city.
    Who it's for
Anyone who likes ancient history and everyday city life on the same street. Walkers, food lovers and people who don't mind heat-baked marble underfoot.
Might not be for you if
You dislike heat or summer crowds at headline sights. The Acropolis hill has almost no shade, and July and August afternoons are the hardest time to be on it.

Athens stopped being just an Acropolis stopover somewhere in the last decade. The ruins are still extraordinary, but so are the neighbourhood wine bars in Koukaki, the street art in Psyri, the food markets and the rooftops where the Parthenon glows at night like a lamp someone left on.

    Athens travel questions, answered

When is the best time to visit Athens?

April to June and September to October are the most commonly recommended months: warm but not extreme, with fewer crowds than summer. July and August are hot and busy, and sightseeing is best done early in the day. Winter is quieter, with cheaper hotels and emptier museums.

Do you need to book Acropolis tickets in advance?

In most cases, yes. The Acropolis uses timed entry, with a daily cap reported at around 20,000 visitors, and summer slots (especially early morning) can sell out days to weeks ahead. Full and reduced ticket prices are listed on the Greek Ministry of Culture's Acropolis page, which links to the official e-ticket service. Buying there avoids reseller markups.

What is the best time of day to visit the Acropolis, and can it close for heat?

Guides commonly suggest the 8am opening or the late afternoon, since there is almost no shade on the hill. On extreme-heat days the Acropolis has closed during the hottest hours, often around midday, so an early slot is the safer choice in summer.

Is the Acropolis Museum included in the Acropolis ticket?

No. The Acropolis Museum is a separate institution with its own tickets. Many visitors pair the two on the same day, with the air-conditioned museum making a good midday break in summer.
