    Albania

"The Mediterranean coastline Europe forgot to price up"

    Albania at a glance

    Best time to go
May to June and September to October are the sweet spots for most trips: warm, swimmable and calmer than July and August. Peak summer brings crowds to the Riviera, and inland highs can pass 35°C. Hiking in the Albanian Alps is a late spring to autumn plan, and snow can linger on the Valbona Pass into late May or early June.
    How long to stay
About a week covers Tirana, a couple of historic towns and the south coast. Ten to fourteen days makes room for the northern Alps and the Lake Koman ferry at a relaxed pace.
    Who it's for
Travellers who like a little adventure: castle towns, coast and mountains, with less polish than better-known European stops.
Might not be for you if
You want peak-summer beach time without crowds. Ksamil and Sarande get very busy in July and August. It's also not ideal for winter mountain trips, when the high trekking routes are effectively closed and many guesthouses shut.

Albania is the last stretch of Mediterranean where a beachfront lunch still costs less than a city coffee. The Riviera between Himarë and Ksamil is genuinely turquoise, the Ottoman towns of Berat and Gjirokastër are UNESCO-listed, and the Accursed Mountains in the north deliver alpine hiking with almost no queue for it.

💡 The Komani ferry, Valbona and Theth make a natural loop — book beds in the guesthouses in summer.

    Albania travel questions, answered

When is the best time to visit Albania?

May, June, September and October usually give the best balance of warm weather, swimmable sea and thinner crowds. July and August are the peak, with packed Riviera beaches, higher prices and hot inland temperatures. Winter is quiet and good for cities, but the Alps are under snow and some accommodation closes.

Do you need a visa for Albania?

Many nationalities do not. Citizens of the EU/EEA, UK, US, Canada and Australia can usually visit visa-free, commonly for up to 90 days in any 180 days, and US citizens are often allowed up to a year. Albania is outside the Schengen Area, so days spent there generally do not count toward Schengen limits. Some visa-free arrangements are renewed by yearly government decision, so lists and dates can change.

When can you do the Valbona to Theth hike?

The hike is a late spring to autumn plan. Snow can stay on the Valbona Pass into late May or even early June, and in winter the high route is effectively closed. The usual way into Valbona is the Lake Koman ferry, which runs roughly from mid-April to early November, with schedules that shift from year to year. Guesthouses in Theth and Valbona can tell you whether the pass is clear before you commit.

Is the Albanian Riviera too crowded in summer?

Ksamil and Sarande can get very crowded in July and August, and prices rise. June and September are the usual suggestions if you want the same coast with more space. Inland places such as Berat, Gjirokaster and Theth are often less affected by beach-season crowds.
